Imitrex is available in tablets to suit your migraine attacks. That means if your doctor agrees that IMITREX is right for you, you may have a choice of how to take your medicine. IMITREX is not habit-forming. IMITREX does not cause drowsiness. Your migraine pain can be relieved while you remain active, alert, and in control.
Imitrex is a headache medicine. It is believed to work by causing vasoconstriction (narrowing) of arteries and veins that supply blood to your head. Sumatriptan tablets and injections are used to treat vascular headaches such as migraine and cluster headaches. Sumatriptan will not prevent migraines or cluster headaches or reduce the number of attacks. It will only treat a migraine or cluster headache that is already occurring.
Imitrex and Pregnancy :- tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while taking sumatriptan, call your doctor.
Imitrex Dosage :- Swallow your IMITREX Tablets whole with water as soon as you feel the first signs of migraine headache pain. Some people have relief of their pain within 30 minutes (14% at 30 minutes, increasing to 61% at 2 hours, versus 5% and 27% for sugar pill) after taking IMITREX 50-mg Tablets; most people get relief within 2 to 4 hours. If after 2 hours you have no relief at all, consult your doctor. If you experience some relief after 2 hours, or if your migraine comes back, you may take a second dose. Always wait 2 hours before taking another dose. Do not take more than 200 mg in 24 hours. Be sure to follow the dosing instructions given to you by your doctor.
What side effects can this medication cause?
Although side effects from sumatriptan are not common, they can occur. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:
- flushing
- tingling feeling
- feeling of warmth or heaviness
- drowsiness
- dizziness
- upset stomach
- diarrhea
- vomiting
- irritation of the nose
- muscle cramps
If you experience any of the following symptoms, call your doctor immediately:
- pain or tightness in chest or throat
- sudden or severe stomach pain
- fast heartbeat
- difficulty breathing
- wheezing
- redness, swelling, or itching of the eyelids, face, or lips
- skin rash, lumps, or hives
- change in vision
Do not take Imitrex If :-Imitrex is a prescription medicine for the acute treatment of migraine attacks, with or without aura, in adults. You should not take Imitrex if you have certain types of heart disease, a history of stroke or TIAs, peripheral vascular disease, Raynaud syndrome, or blood pressure that is uncontrolled. If you have risk factors for heart disease, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, or are a smoker, you should be evaluated by your doctor before taking IMITREX. Very rarely, certain people, even some without heart disease, have had serious heart-related problems when taking Imitrex.
If you are currently taking other medications or if you are pregnant, nursing, or thinking about becoming pregnant, you should talk to your doctor before taking Imitrex. If your headaches are not migraines, Imitrex is not for you.
