Famvir Tablet Information : Famciclovir is used to treat the symptoms of herpes zoster (also known as shingles), a herpes virus infection of the skin. It is used to treat and suppress recurrent episodes of genital herpes infection. Famciclovir is also used to treat recurrent herpes virus infections of the mucous membranes (lips and mouth) and genitals in HIV-infected patients. Although Famciclovir will not cure genital herpes or herpes zoster, it does help relieve the pain and discomfort and helps the sores heal faster.

Before Using Famvir Tablet

In deciding to use Famciclovir, the risks of taking the medicine must be weighed against the good it will do. For this medication, the following should be considered:

Famvir Tablet & Allergies—Tell your doctor if you have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to famciclovir. Also tell your health care professional if you are allergic to any other substances, such as foods, sulfites or other preservatives, or dyes.

Famvir Tablet & Pregnancy-Famciclovir has not been studied in pregnant women. However, famciclovir has not been shown to cause birth defects or other problems in animal studies.

Famvir Tablet & Breast feeding—It is not known whether Famciclovir passes into the breast milk of humans; however, it does pass into the milk of rats. This medication is not recommended during breast-feeding because it may cause unwanted effects in nursing babies.

Famvir Tablet & Children—Studies on Famciclovir have been done only in adult patients, and there is no specific information comparing use of famciclovir in children with use in other age groups.

Famvir Tablet & Older adults—Famciclovir has been used in the elderly and has not been shown to cause different side effects or problems in older people than it does in younger adults.

Other medicines—Although certain medicines should not be used together at all, in other cases two different medicines may be used together even if an interaction might occur. In these cases, your doctor may want to change your dose or other precautions may be necessary. Tell your health care professional if you are taking any other prescription or nonprescription (over-the-counter [OTC]) medicine.

How to take famvir-Take Famciclovir exactly as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these directions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you. Treatment with famciclovir should be started as soon as possible after the first appearance of symptoms (e.g. tingling, burning, blisters). Take each dose with a full glass of water. Famciclovir can be taken with or without food. Taking famciclovir with food may decrease stomach upset. Take all of the famciclovir that has been prescribed for you even if you begin to feel better.

MISSED DOSE : Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next regularly scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and take the next one as directed. Do not take a double dose of Famciclovir unless otherwise directed by your doctor.

OVER DOSE : Seek emergency medical attention. A Famciclovir overdose has no known symptoms, but an overdose of acyclovir (Zovirax), which is a similar drug, may cause seizures, hallucinations, and kidney damage (decreased urine production).

SIDE EFFECTS : Stop taking Famciclovir and seek emergency medical attention if you experience: # an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of your throat; swelling of your lips, tongue, or face; or hives)

Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue to take famciclovir and talk to your doctor if you experience:

• nausea or vomiting
• headache
• diarrhea
• dizziness, tingling in your hands or feet
• itching
