Important safety information about Depakote
Depakote Serious side effects :- It is very important that you know about these serious side effects of Depakote and talk about them with your doctor.
- Some people have experienced serious liver problems while taking Depakote. Your doctor should check your liver function before you start Depakote and at frequent intervals thereafter, and will also monitor you for symptoms that lead to liver toxicity. Before starting Depakote, tell your doctor if you have liver disease.
- Some people taking Depakote have experienced a serious problem called pancreatitis, which means the pancreas has become inflamed. Call your doctor immediately if you experience stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, and/or loss of appetite.
- Some people taking Depakote may experience low blood platelet counts. Your doctor should order blood tests to check your platelets while you are taking Depakote.
- Women who could become pregnant should talk with their doctors before taking Depakote. Depakote has been associated with birth defects in women who have taken it while pregnant. If you become pregnant while taking Depakote, contact your doctor immediately. An information sheet describing the potential for birth defects is available from your doctor or pharmacist.
- Elevated levels of ammonia have been reported in some patients receiving valproate. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience abnormal drowsiness and vomiting or changes in mental status.
- People who are starting treatment with Depakote may become drowsy and should not drive or operate dangerous machinery until they know how Depakote will affect them.
- Depakote should not be taken by people with liver disease. Depakote should also not be taken by people who are allergic to it or by people with urea cycle disorders, which cause too much ammonia to build up in the body.
- Keep Depakote and all other medications where children cannot reach them.
Miss a dose of Depakote :- If you forget to take one of your doses at the scheduled time, go ahead and take it as soon as you remember. However, if it's almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. DO NOT TAKE A DOUBLE DOSE. If you have a pill box, you may find it helpful to fill it in the morning with the correct number of tablets for the day. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to call your doctor or pharmacist.
How you should store Depakote :- As with all medications, Depakote should be keep in a safe place, tightly closed and out of the reach of children. Depakote should be stored at room temperature (below 86°F). DO NOT keep it in the refrigerator.
